Damien Hirst and Mark Hix double up to launch the second of Hirst’s Pharmacy restaurants at the artist’s Newport Street Gallery in Vauxhall, SE11, on Tuesday 23rd February 2016.
We were excited to report the launch of Damien Hirst’s new gallery on Newport Street in Vauxhall at the end of last year, but the news of his restaurant collaboration with Mark Hix (Pharmacy 2), which is due to open at the aptly named Newport Street Gallery next week, is hugely exciting and further evidence that the draw to SE11 continues.
It will be the second of Hirst’s apothecary styled dining concepts. The original ‘Pharmacy’ in Notting Hill was a popular celebrity haunt for it’s five years of operation before closing in 2003 and so we expect even greater things with the brilliant pairing to culinary giant Mark Hix, whose own successful restaurant concepts are a big draw to those looking for great food in a theatrical but comfortable setting.
Pharmacy 2 is a short walk from Vauxhall tube station and can be found upstairs in the Newport Street Gallery itself. Unlike Pharmacy 1, which was more closely aligned in appearance to an actual chemist’s shop, Pharmacy 2 is reported by the Evening Standard to be more like a ‘madcap, vaguely hallucinogenic art space in which one can also eat’ and which is ‘perhaps more fitting for 2016’s foodie-experience-obsessed Instagram generation’. The design includes pill-shaped seats, an array of medicine cabinets, including ointments and pills from the artists’ own cabinet and some of his earlier and famous exhibits such as his Kaleidoscope Butterflies.
Hix’s menu of classically British and European food, will cater for people looking for a refreshment post gallery visit or those simply making a bee-line for the restaurant itself. The Launceston lamb and turnip pie, Roast Lyme Bay monkfish tail with rosemary and the roast barn reared Indian rock chicken with stuffing are on our hit list of dishes to try.
The big opening is next week on Tuesday 23rd February 2016, so get in quickly and reserve your table here.BACK TO NEWS
